On the evening of March 1st, Taoiseach Enda Kenny made a historic statement in Dáil Eireann, acknowledging formal recognition by the State of Irish Travellers as an indigenous ethnic minority.

“Our Traveller community is an integral part of our society for over a millennium, with their own distinct identity – a people within our people.”Said Mr. Kenny.

Cork City PPN welcomes this landmark statement as the beginning of a more inclusive society from which to continue to build social justice for all. Huge credit is due to members of the traveller community who have worked for many years to achieve this recognition.

The PPN looks forward to working and collaborating with our network members in Traveller Visibility, the Southern Traveller Health Network Group and Cork Traveller Women’s Network to deepen understanding of traveller identity, concerns and visions for the community.
